Asking You About... Tanning

Something you will rarely see me posting or writing about is tanning of any kind - sunless, natural, salon-based, whatever. To be honest, it's a topic I'm a little clueless about when it comes to cosmetics.

Living in the "Valley of the Sun," where 5-6 months of the year the temperature is over 100 degrees, I'm no stranger to tanning trends. Tanning salons are incredibly popular here, and all the college girls are baked to fake orange perfection (a look I can't stand). You practically feel pressured to be dark, or else you stick out in a crowd.

However, I'm also no stranger to the effects of the sun. My own father and grandfather have skin cancer, and must protect themselves every day. I'm also a candidate. Skin cancer rates are on the rise, and my state has the highest occurrence rate in the US, naturally.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm pale as a ghost, but that won't change! I protect myself from the sun daily, and while I've considered sunless tanning, my boyfriend simply insists that my skin is gorgeous the way it is and won't let me near the stuff. I'd never consider sun tanning; it's pure damage to the skin and the top cause of premature aging. I want great skin when I'm 60, something the tanning salon girls won't have without serious surgery!

Do you tan naturally or use sunless tanner? Do you feel you need sun protection every day? Are you a sun worshiper or a vampire? If you're pale, do you embrace it? Would you like to see me investigate budget self-tanners? ;)

Tell all - I want to know what you think! Especially you, silent readers!

Hello there! I would ignore the first poster...I don't believe you have sun phobia...lol. Yes, sunlight is good for you...but you need protection! Yes, the girls at your school make look good now, but 10 years from now they will look like raisins. I would embrace being light skinned and protect your skin. Getting skin cancer isn't worth it.

Anyways, to answer your question...I tan really easily, so I always need protection, so sunscreen is a must for me!

Fabu-less: thanks for your input! I totally agree. And I'm a very strong advocate of sun protection, of course... NOT staying out of it altogether! That's silly.

I know some girls who tan once a week - I can't imagine! Plus, the money :P Not for me.

Thanks again, and keep that sunscreen handy :) At least you must always have a nice glow, right? ;)

OMG finally someone who is like me...i live in O.C. and tan is the look...but guess what? i am pale...even thu thanx to my neutral and warm undertones i do not have that very pale affect..and mu foundation color is usually the second to the lightest shade (depends can be the 2nd lightest). I hate the sun...i wear sun protection no matter what...even thu i do not burn but tan (again thanx to my genes) i hate getting darker. I am a true vampire and proud of it...i do however use blush and bronzer (started using bronzer this summer)so i do not look 2 pale. I use the bronzer on my tramples and halo of my cheeks. I think the god given color of anyone's skin is what looks beautiful on them. I am like u in risk of skin or oral cancer (and many other types of cancer) since my grandmother dies of oral cancer and so did her brother.
I do stay away from sun for another reason...I faint when it is 2 hot...good think i will not be in California for long thu :)
