Wild About Eyeshadow Palettes

Today I've come to you to rave about one of my favorite drugstore finds: Wet n Wild Ultimate Expressions Eyeshadow Palettes. Wait, don't leave... I can explain.

I know what some of you are thinking: "Seriously, Jenn? Wet n Wild?" Yes, actually. I know many of us have had some disastrous purchases from them in the past, but this is one you should really consider. I was definitely NOT a fan of the company until I tried this, but I've had a little change of heart.

When I first started trying to seriously do makeup, these were my go-to products for pulling off eyeshadow. Why? These palettes are fool-proof. Each one includes eight colors, all of which can be mixed, matched, and layered for a perfect look. Instructions are on the back of the palette to make things even simpler, if you're a total beginner.

The shadows themselves are soft, blendable, and smooth. Some are more matte or shimmery than others, but none are obnoxiously loud or glittery. They apply easily with your shadow brush or the included foam applicator, and with a primer, are sure to last all day without creasing or fading. They aren't super-pigmented, but they're wonderful for flattering, natural looks. If bold is more your thing, there are enough contrasting colors to suit you, too.

Give these a try - these palettes are only $4.99 each. The only drawback? There aren't enough color varieties! Currently available are Sand Castle, Paradise Cove, and Fantasy Island - I use Paradise Cove myself.

What do you think? I'm not crazy, I swear.

Tip of the Day #7: Overstock and Donation Stores

With money being a little hard to come by these days, I thought today's tip would help those of us who are especially hard-pressed. Overstock and donation stores aren't a big secret for some shoppers, but I thought I'd share some information, based on personal experiences, for women who may not be in the know.

Stores like Big Lots - with 1,500 stores in 47 states in the US - sell all sorts of merchandise at overstock and closeout prices, including a few brands of cosmetics. This is a great place to look for discontinued and highly discounted products. My local stores seem to have a good amount of cosmetics from Revlon, Milani, and a couple others; just the other day, I bought three products for about $8.

I've heard that in other states, you can also find some great items from NYX, a great high-quality budget brand available online and in some boutiques where I live.

If you go, make sure to check not only the beauty aisles, but the clearance items as well! Try to find a nice, clean store to shop in for the most enjoyable experience.

Another option is to check donation-based stores, such as Goodwill. These stores often have loads of unused cosmetics and beauty samples, such as from Avon representatives. If you're in a very dire financial situation, this might be an affordable option for you. Look for sealed, new cosmetics properly stored in closed bags.

I want to sincerely wish everyone well during difficult times, especially to those struggling and making sacrifices right now. I hope these tips might help some of you, and if you have any questions or just want to talk, drop me a line anytime by e-mail or via comments. :)

Happy budget beauty shopping!

Buzzin' with Jenn

Hi everyone! If you haven't already noticed, I recently installed my little "Buzz Box" in the side menu. Whether you're just dropping by, don't feel like sending an e-mail, or want to chat it up with me, please feel free to write a little something there! I'll be checking it frequently for new messages.

I hope to hear from more of you soon - I'd love to get to know my visitors and readers better! :)

DIB: High-End vs. Low-End Foundation Primer

Here's the feature I've been promising for a few weeks now - my comparison of two primers; one high-end and one low-end. I'll be taking a look at several factors in each product; primarily packaging, look, feel, and wear, as well as value and function.

I hope this helps in your decision-making for buying primers - maybe you'll decide one of them is right for you!

Now, on to the primers...

The Cult Favorite
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

Ingredients: Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Isopropylparaben, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbic Acid, Carthamus Tinctorium (Safflower) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cola Acuminata Seed Extract, Propylene Glycol, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben, Water

Price: $36.00/.93 oz

Other: Not paraben-free

The Budget Contender
Natural Beauty by Sally Hansen Luminizing Face Primer

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Tribehenin, Mica, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Dipropylene Glycol, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Olea Europa (Olive) Leaf Extract, Tropolone, Quercus Suber Bark Extract, Titanium Dioxide (CI77891)

Price: $9.99/.48 oz

Other: Paraben-free

Packaging & Price: Like Smashbox's primer, this comes in a pump-top bottle - however, in some bottles, it doesn't always dispense properly and might spurt out quickly, so be prepared by placing your hand in front of the opening, not below it. You receive about half the product with Sally Hansen, but the price is much less. The smell is a little chemical-y, and some are bothered by this. If you are concerned, there are no parabens in the Luminizing Primer; some are present in Smashbox's.

Texture: While Smashbox feels more like a lotion, the Luminizing Primer has a consistency closer to a liquid cream. The ingredients contain more oils, and has more slip on the skin. That being said, however, this is likely not a good product for those with very oily skin. Smashbox, on the other hand, makes a light version of their primer for oily and sensitive skin, which is what I use.

Look: Sally Hansen's primer imparts a shimmer to the skin that becomes very subtle when makeup is applied over it. If shimmer is an absolute no-no for you, then this obviously isn't the best option. For those of us looking for a little glow, this is a fun way to get it.

Feel & Wear: After the primer is absorbed, skin feels very moisturized - not as smooth as the Smashbox, but softer, like you've applied a hydrating cream to your face. This primer seems to need a little more time to absorb and get rid of the "greasy" feeling compared to Smashbox Light, though; maybe take this into consideration if your routine must require very little time. It has a similar texture and absorption time to the original Smashbox.

As for wear and foundation application, I found the two to be close. Smashbox does a better job of filling in lines and decreasing the look of pores, but the application of my liquid foundation still felt very similar, which is important to me. Those looking for the smooth, perfecting effect might want to stick with Smashbox, since it's more of a dual-purpose product. Sally Hansen does what it says it does: prepares and smoothes, luminates skin, and extends the wear and staying power of foundation.

You'll like Smashbox better if: it's already your HG primer, you can afford the price, you're looking for a primer that preps and perfects skin, you need oil control

You'll like Sally Hansen better if: you're on a budget, you're looking for a simple foundation primer, you want a little glow, you don't use products with parabens

In the end, I enjoyed using the Luminizing Primer once I got used to it. While it's true that Smashbox Photo Finish smoothes and fills the skin better, it's not a huge concern for me - and the price tag is beyond low-budget affordability.

Some have complained Sally Hansen's product does not help foundation stay longer or look better, but I disagree. If you're really intrigued and want to try it for yourself, I'd suggest going for it - try and find a coupon or a sale, if you're worried, and buy from a store with a good return policy (as always!)

Next I'll be trying the infamous "Monistat" primer, the ingredients of which are extremely similar to those of Smashbox (see post here). For the time being, I'll keep using the Sally Hansen primer and will definitely consider repurchasing!

My Skincare Regimen

I don't often make posts here that are only personal, but once in a while, I feel like sharing something that could be relevant - like my skincare regimen. I've seen several others do something similar, so why not?

I'd like to briefly run through the steps of my daily and nightly "program," for those who are curious about what I actually use. Of course, it changes frequently, but it should remain the same for a while. :)

Day

1. Wash with a gentle exfoliating scrub, Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub.
This is my daily scrub. It removes all the product I applied at night, while lightly exfoliating and awakening my skin for the day to give it a "fresh" look. Read my full review here.

2. Pat face lightly with clean hand towel.
Never rub!

3. Apply Aveeno Positively Ageless Eye Cream to entire eye area with fingers, patting lightly until blended completely.
I bought this eye cream a while ago, and am trying to use it up before buying a new one. I probably won't be repurchasing, and my future review will explain why, but it's better than not using any cream at all.

4. While face is about 75% dry, apply moisturizer, Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion with SPF 15 to face and neck.
My new favorite moisturizer! I always, always wear an SPF of 15+, no matter how much time I'm spending outside during the day.

5. Apply make-up, if necessary.
I usually go without for a couple days of the week to allow my skin to "breathe."

Night

1. Use a facial cleansing cloth and ALMAY Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover Liquid to thoroughly remove all make-up.
I've never relied on my facial cleanser to remove all my make-up, so this extra step ensures it all comes off my skin.

2. Wash with Olay Definity Pore Refining Scrub.
This is less of a scrub and more of a wash, so it's extra-gentle for nighttime.

3. Pat face lightly with clean hand towel.

4. Apply Aveeno Positively Ageless Eye Cream to entire eye area.

5. Apply a generous amount of Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Treatment to face and neck.
I love this night cream because it applies thickly, but absorbs fast. I always wake up with soft, hydrated skin. Another full review that should be on its way soon!

6. If any blemishes are present, dab on a small amount of an acne spot treatment, like Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment.

7. Get plenty of beauty sleep!

Every Other Night

After washing and before applying creams, I'll apply a small amount of .01% Tretinoin all over my face. I have a hard time putting on my creams after, though, because the Tretinoin seems to flake off when I touch my skin. Sometimes I'll just leave the Tretinoin on by itself instead, but I'd like to figure out the trick to applying product over it!

In addition to the above, once or twice a week, I'll use a heavier exfoliant to really smooth my skin and get a deep cleaning. I'm still searching for the perfect product, though!

All these products, except the Tretinoin (which must be obtained through a doctor or dermatologist), can be purchased at your local drugstore.

That's all there is to it, really - no super-expensive products or complex rituals here, and many say I have beautiful skin! Contrary to popular belief, it really can be done without $300 creams and fancy cleansers... I believe the keys are prevention, protection, moisture, cleansing, and treatment. Once in a while, I may also get a facial or try an at-home mask to mix up my routine a bit and try new things.

Good luck with your own skincare programs, and if you'd like, let me know about it!

Asking You About... Tanning

Something you will rarely see me posting or writing about is tanning of any kind - sunless, natural, salon-based, whatever. To be honest, it's a topic I'm a little clueless about when it comes to cosmetics.

Living in the "Valley of the Sun," where 5-6 months of the year the temperature is over 100 degrees, I'm no stranger to tanning trends. Tanning salons are incredibly popular here, and all the college girls are baked to fake orange perfection (a look I can't stand). You practically feel pressured to be dark, or else you stick out in a crowd.

However, I'm also no stranger to the effects of the sun. My own father and grandfather have skin cancer, and must protect themselves every day. I'm also a candidate. Skin cancer rates are on the rise, and my state has the highest occurrence rate in the US, naturally.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm pale as a ghost, but that won't change! I protect myself from the sun daily, and while I've considered sunless tanning, my boyfriend simply insists that my skin is gorgeous the way it is and won't let me near the stuff. I'd never consider sun tanning; it's pure damage to the skin and the top cause of premature aging. I want great skin when I'm 60, something the tanning salon girls won't have without serious surgery!

Do you tan naturally or use sunless tanner? Do you feel you need sun protection every day? Are you a sun worshiper or a vampire? If you're pale, do you embrace it? Would you like to see me investigate budget self-tanners? ;)

Tell all - I want to know what you think! Especially you, silent readers!

Review: Lumene Dream Lips Age-Defying Lip Care

I've heard some good things about Lumene, a CVS-exclusive cosmetics brand. And since I'm crazy about lip care products, I decided to check out the Lumene Dream Lips Age-Defying Lip Care.

This lip cream comes in an unmistakable blue tube that I love to carry in my purse. The price seemed more or less reasonable for the amount of product given - more than many other lip treatments - and it even offers some sun protection.

Product Description: "The nurturing lip care protects the sensitive skin of the lips against sun, frost and wind. Soothes chapped lips and keeps them soft. UVA/UVB –protection helps to protect lips against the harmful effects of UV-radiation. Dermatologically tested. Effect: Irresistibly smooth lips!"

Price: $4.99/.5 oz

Other: Contains petrolatum and parabens.

Results: This lip product is, as it says, mostly a conditioning cream to keep lips soft and moisturized. It has a light, almost fruity scent that makes it pleasant to wear.

Be careful not to apply too much - the cream is a little opaque, so for pigmented lips, they can end up looking pale! If you apply just the right amount, it gives a very light, glossy sheen that can neutralize the look of pigmented lips slightly.

The feel of the product is light and slightly oily - not greasy - and the texture is silky. I found my lips felt softer and more hydrated after wearing for a while, but there are definitely a few problems: longevity and intensity.

You'll have to reapply frequently if you even THINK about drinking, eating, talking a lot... you get my point. I was reaching back into my bag every 30 minutes or so. Personally, I prefer something longer-lasting.

Next, this is not a very effective treatment for very dry, chapped lips, or for anyone seeking intensive protection. The formula simply isn't very strong, and since it doesn't stay well, will not work miracles on damaged lips.

The SPF 4 is a nice addition, but a stronger SPF would be better. I believe this is the only "age-defying" aspect of the product, so the title can be misleading.

In short, it's a fairly nice lip cream for keeping lips soft and smooth - if they're in good condition to begin with. Since I need something a little stronger, though, I don't think I'll be buying again, especially for the price. This is not to say that I won't buy from Lumene in the future, though!

You will like this product if:
Your lips are rarely chapped, you're looking for a lip product with an SPF, you want shine without a thick, sticky gloss

You won't like this product if: You don't like oily lip products, you have very dry, chapped lips, you don't use products with parabens or petrolatum

Rating: 2.5/5

ULTA Free Sample Bag Gift

Fresh off the press - ULTA.com has a new offer exclusive to online orders!

Any online order of $25 or more will score you a free messenger bag - packed with samples from Neutrogena, bareMinerals, TooFaced, Smashbox, Murad, and others - while supplies last.

My only wish is that they had decided to put it in something cuter than a messenger bag - ULTA's gift bags are usually much more fun and colorful. I could probably use this, but I know a lot of women who wouldn't!

But the main target here, of course, is the free samples... who doesn't love those?

Go Xtreme With Your Nails

While browsing the new product displays at the drugstore cosmetics department the other day, something new and exciting for nails caught my eye! So, of course, I must let you know about it.

Non-traditional French manicures have been going mainstream lately, and Sally Hansen has decided to cash in on it. Four limited edition Sally Hansen Xtreme French Manicure kits are now available in stores for a fantastic $4.99!

These adorable little kits each include a set of tip guides, a mini nail file, one white polish, two colored polishes, and a clear top coat polish.

The color sets available:
Pink and black (shown here)
Red and silver
Purple and pink
Dark and light blue

The great thing about having three polishes per set is that you can create whatever combination you want! You could even mix polishes from different sets - so fun!

They're still so new that you won't find them anywhere online (thus the poor quality photo taken by me). So far I've only been able to locate these at Walgreens, but I'm hoping they'll also come to CVS and ULTA soon.

Xtreme is in, ladies - show it off on your nails with a chic, fresh twist on the French Manicure!

Adventures with Threading

I wonder if this is my topic of the week... ;)

Anyway, after Tuesday's post, I decided to take the plunge yesterday and get my eyebrows threaded. I called up Indian threading guru Rhamba and scheduled an appointment right away! Fortunately, the place we looked up was a short 15-minute drive from my house.

When I arrived, Rhamba had me lay down on a bed, wiped down my brows, and went to work with the cotton threads. It didn't hurt much at first, but after my skin became more sensitive, I was feeling it more. Since I haven't had my brows done in over six months, there was quite a bit to take care of. I'd say the general pain factor is a notch or two above waxing, but nothing unbearable.

Overall, the appointment took about 10-15 minutes. After, my sensitive skin was very pink, but it subsided in about an hour.

The results? I love them! Rhamba made my brows a little thinner than I'd normally like, but it was my fault for not specifying thickness - I decided to let her decide, since it was my first time.

Here's an after shot of one of my brows... I'm so excited that they look decent again! Who knew my brows had any arch?

My threading experience cost me a mere $12 before gratuity, an amazing price considering what other places charge for threading and waxing around here. If you can find a good technician, this is a great, cheaper, more effective alternative to waxing. I'll gladly go back in a few weeks!

Now to work on my filling techniques :)

Asking You About... Threading

I've been thinking about threading as an alternative to waxing for a while now, but after Fabu-Less Beauty recommended it to me, I decided to look into it more seriously.

So far, it's been difficult to find a (mainstream) place in the Phoenix metro area that does it. I did check out the website of one well-known spa's waxing guru, but she charged a ridiculous $55 for eyebrow threading! That's more than twice the amount of most eyebrow waxing sessions!!

I've heard that threading usually goes for much cheaper, so I was very disappointed. I'll have to continue my search.

I'd like to hear your experiences with the technique - cost, results, etc. Is it hard to find in your area, too? I imagine it would be much more popular in a place like California, but here, we're a little on the primitive side when it comes to cultural awareness... so I bet there's less demand. :( People are very, very into waxing here.

Anyway, let me know what you think, and if you can offer any tips or advice! Thanks! :)

DIY: Lip Exfoliation

You may already know that your lips benefit from an occasional exfoliation, but let's face it: how often do we give our lips the attention they need? Sometimes a little more than balm and an SPF are required.

Before you even consider running out and buying a pricey lip exfoliant, though - such as Laura Mercier Lip Silk, $20, or Peter Thomas Roth Lips to Die for, $60 - consider all the options you can try at home first.

Maybe you've heard of one or two of these methods before, but I'd like to share the best tips I've found both online and in my own bathroom. Many are so simple that you can incorporate them into your routine without any trouble at all - and some require you to be a little more creative. Read on for your most kissable lips on a budget!

Step 1: Prep

Just like with the skin on the rest of your body, preparing before exfoliating does a lot of good. Your lips should be moist and soft before you attack it with anything that could be damaging, or else you could hurt them, and the exfoliation might be much less effective.

  • Take a shower - I've found the best time to exfoliate lips is after a shower, when the skin is softest and dead cells are most easily removed. It isn't always possible to shower, though, I know!
  • Place a warm, damp washcloth or hand towel over your lips for a few minutes, until soft.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Now comes the fun part! There are several methods to doing this, so you can try whatever is easiest or most appealing to you.

  • Run your toothbrush under warm water. Place a drop of toothpaste or Vaseline on it, then massage your lips with the brush in small, gentle, circular motions. You can also try without using any product, if the skin is soft enough. Just make sure you're being very gentle - you don't want to make your lips sore or bleed! Continue massaging for 1-2 minutes, or as long as you feel comfortable. Rinse the toothbrush very well after. I recommend buying a new, soft-bristled brush just for your lips - they're cheap!
  • Take a warm, damp washcloth. Place it over one finger, and use this as your tool to massage your lips carefully in the same circular motions mentioned above. The rough texture of the washcloth will help buff away rough dead skin. This method seems the most gentle, but may not be the most effective.
  • Mix baking soda with water and apply it as a paste to your lips. Salt is also suggested by some, but be careful with it, since it can be rougher.
  • Take some of your lip balm and mix some sugar into it, then use as a scrub with your fingertips
  • If you don't mind getting a little messy, try a scrub of honey and sugar - just a few drops will work. Honey acts as a natural moisturizer, humectant, and anti-irritant, so the scrub will be very gentle on your lips - and yummy, too!

Step 3: Moisturize & Protect

This is one step you should do every day already, but it's especially important after exfoliating. Your skin will have less protection against the environment and the sun and needs extra moisture. Always apply a moisturizing lip balm, preferably with an SPF of 5 or more (try Neutrogena MoistureShine Soothing LipSheers with SPF 20 for a lipstick feel, or MoistureShine Lip Soother Cooling Hydragel with SPF 20 for a glossy shine). If you don't mind using Vaseline, put a balm under it and thinly coat to keep moisture in overnight and get perfectly soft lips.

Always limit your sun exposure in the summer, regardless of whether or not you're exfoliating often - it just makes good skincare sense! :)

I hope this helped someone, and that you're willing to give a few of these a try. If you do, let me know how it works out.

Do you have any great methods for lip exfoliation? Share!

EOTD: Smoky Eye Look

Today I'm showcasing one of my first attempt at a "smoky eye look," on a budget! This was inspired partly by the gorgeous smoky eye tutorial posted on Pursebuzz.com a few weeks ago. Since I don't have NARS and MAC shadows at hand, I decided to try achieving a similar look using what I own. I definitely think it's possible to create great looks using budget makeup! ...Just not by my own hands. ;)

On Eyes:
All ULTA unless otherwise noted

Iceland (shimmer white)
Platinum (shimmer light gray)
Peacock (shimmer medium gray)
Galaxy (sparkle black)
CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara
L'Oreal HIP Color Truth Eyeliner in Black
Physician's Formula EyeBrightener Liner in Metallic Black
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

If only I had a place to wear a look like this! So dramatic!

I know, it doesn't exactly look great on my oddly shaped blue eyes... but I'll keep working on improving it. :) Unfortunately I still have the worst eyebrows in the world. I blame my blond roots!

Please tell me what you think, share your tips, etc. Someday I'll be better at this makeup thing, I swear :P

For now, back to the makeup case...

Tip of the Day #6 - Nail File 101

Today's tip comes from my area of specialty - nail care! Growing and maintaining natural nails is no easy task, but I've learned a lot along the way. Here's some good info and reminders about files, one of the keys to great nails.

Sometimes it's really easy to forget the simple things, like those little ways to keep yourself beautiful AND healthy. Nail files and emery boards are no exception - they shouldn't be ignored, because the health of your nails may depend on you taking the right precautions.

It's suggested that you throw away your cardboard nail file/emery board every three months or so. I highly recommend sticking to this, especially if you use your file once a week or more. There isn't a way to really clean or sanitize these files, so you never know what kinds of germs or bacteria they could be harboring... and potentially contaminating your beautiful nails.

To eliminate this problem entirely, I also recommend investing in a glass file. Glass does wonders for your nails - it files cleanly and smoothly, leaving no ragged edges after. It can reduce peeling and breakage caused by files made of cheaper material as well. Finally, it seals the nail better because the grit is much finer than with traditional files. Try filing at a 45-degree angle to get the smoothest finish (whether you're using glass or not).

Did I mention glass files can also be cleaned and disinfected? Wipe yours down with rubbing alcohol once a week (after every use is preferable) to keep your tool safe and healthy.

Try http://www.aboutglassnailfiles.com/ to get a cheap, cute, personalized glass file. (Thanks to All Lacquered Up for the link!) Your nails will thank you for it! I ♥ mine.

Splurge of the Month: ULTA Haul

Wow, I haven't done a post like this in a while! Haha... I've been pretty good about spending as little money as possible lately, but I got a few little bonuses at work and decided I had earned a tiny shopping trip.

With all the great sales going on at ULTA now, I knew it was the right place to go. Here's a look at what I picked up.

I've been dying for a new moisturizer ever since I ran out about two weeks ago - I had some other stuff on standby, but I've mostly been sneaking some from my mom's collection. After a few days of trying what she uses, though - Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion - I fell in love with it! And I've heard so many good things. I thought it was a little pricey at first, but then realized it was less than the Aveeno moisturizer I had been using. It's so light and non-greasy, I sometimes forget I've already put it on. The SPF is only 15, but I figured I've been pretty good about staying out of the sun lately anyway.

Along the same lines, I also purchased the Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturizing Treatment. Everywhere I look lately, I'm being told that a night cream is a good idea - especially because cell turnover rate is the highest at night, and skin absorbs the most when we sleep. Of course, they could just be saying that to make you buy more products, but maybe there really is something beneficial to a night cream. I'm liking it so far - very moisturizing, nicely scented, and I woke up this morning with skin that felt fresh and hydrated.

All Olay products at ULA are 15% off through 5/31/08!

Next, I bought two new pieces of makeup - is it any surprise they're both from the new Sally Hansen Natural Beauty collection? Ha, no way!

What was great about these, though, is that the store display also had $2.00 off coupons - and ULTA let me combine it with their buy one, get one 50% off offer for Sally Hansen products! This means I got $2.00 off the first product AND got the second for 50% off! Awesome!

First, I picked up the Luminizing Face Primer. I had some reservations because the amount of product is so small, but I'm always looking for an alternative to super-expensive high-end primers. I'll let you know how I like it!

Second is the Color Comfort Lip Color in Sunburst. I'm not usually a lipstick-wearer, but figured it was worth a shot. I'm also no good at describing colors, but I'd say it's a mauve-pink with a hint of gold shimmer to it. Something like that. It looked pretty in the tube, at least!

It was pretty hard to pull myself away from the rest of the collection once I had seen it in person, though - the eye shadow palettes and lip glosses in particular seemed to be calling out to me... I'll have to return for more later.

Anyway, that's my little ULTA haul and splurge of the month. It isn't much, but I'm still working off my extremely tight budget here. ...Is it October yet? Can I start spending regularly again? Oh, the pain...

TotalBeauty.com Update

If you've visited TotalBeauty.com in the last few days and have tried to enter the contest I mentioned a few days ago, you've probably found there was some kind of glitch in the system... meaning no reviews or contest entries. :(

As of today, though, everything seems to be back in working order - I tested the site a few times to make sure. Hopefully it won't break again!

Have fun with the contest, and remember, don't submit "reviews" unless they're good and honest. :)

LORAC Lotsa Gift Set - $25

This set of favorites from LORAC, an online-only exclusive available from Sephora, provides beauty essentials for a quick and glamorous pick-me-up any time of day. Included in the Lotsa Gift Set are Lotsa Lip Plumping Lipstick in Kissin, Plumping Lip Gloss in Cutie, and Lotsa Lash Fiber Mascara in Black. The lip products contain tri-peptide plumping ingredients to "visually enhance" lips, while the mascara contains nylon fibers for ultimate length, curl, and volume. Mom is sure to love this glam little kit for her purse.

Clinique Perfectly Happy - $25, and Clinique The Kissers - $25

The Clinique Perfectly Happy set is perfect for any mom who enjoys being feminine, and one who's also always on-the-go. It includes two dual-ended products with a Clinique Happy fragrance rollerball applicator on one end, and a Plump and Shine lip color on the other. The colors included are Peach Plump and Pink Champagne, and everything comes nicely packaged in a pretty, orange floral box. Chic and convenient - when Mom is in a hurry, she can grab whichever lip color she likes and have a lovely portable fragrance on hand at the same time.

If your mom adores lip gloss as much as you, consider The Kissers. This set of four mini Superbalm Moisturizing Glosses in Apricot, Raspberry, Lilac, and Grapefruit comes in your choice of super-cute pink or yellow floral bag. The balm-glosses relieve dryness while packing the color and shine of a gloss, and providing moisture she'll love just as much. Too cute!

Sally Hansen Perfect Pedicure Kit
- $9.99

If your mother is like mine, then she is constantly plagued by dry, tired feet - yet never has the time or money to spend getting a spa pedicure every few weeks. The Sally Hansen Perfect Pedicure Kit may be a little hard to find, but features great products to rejuvenate and refresh. It includes a smoothing foot scrub, a healing foot stick, a moisturizing creme, toenail clippers, and a pair of booties as a bonus - so she can apply her foot cream, slip them on overnight and wake up to beautiful, rested feet.

Salon & Spa Gift Certificate

You may not think $25 or less will get you much at a spa, but you may be wrong! Depending on the spa, for this price, you could treat Mom to a manicure, mini-facial, shampoo or blow-dry, deep conditioning treatment, or even some newly shaped or tinted brows. If she chooses, she can instead apply the credit toward a more expensive service she's been craving. Either way, you'll be showing you think it's important for her to take care of herself, and encouraging her to do so is a wonderful way to prove you care.

There is an endless number of ways to express your love this Mother's Day, but a little pampering gift never hurts. Have fun and be creative - because she'll love whatever you give her no matter what it is; even a simple, beautiful card. Just remember not to stress, even if you're on a tight budget! There are always options! :)

What are your Mother's Day plans? What are you going to do for Mom? Any other great budget gift ideas? Let's hear it!

Give Your Lips a Boost

Balms not moisturizing enough lately? Lips looking a little dry and pale? Consider trying my favorite lip treatment, a rare gem from Neutrogena (!).

The Neutrogena Lip Boost Intense Moisture Therapy sells for $6.99 and is packed with soothing, moisturizing ingredients like cucumber, peppermint, and sesame oil, and softens lips like nothing else I've tried.

In a few hours, my dry, chapped lips are smooth and conditioned to near-perfection. And it works fantastically overnight. It isn't a lip plumper, but it gently enhances fullness and brings color and health back to pale pouts. A light and sweet minty flavor and satiny texture makes this creamy product highly addictive, so you won't mind reapplying often. An added bonus is a soft sheen that doesn't look super-glossy and doesn't feel greasy or waxy. You only need to use a small amount. One small con: you may have to knead the tube a little on occasion to make sure the ingredients are mixed well, but that's easy enough!

I enjoy this product so much and use it so often, I own about three at the moment. Did I mention your boyfriend will love it, too? He won't believe how soft your lips are! Trust me. ;)

Review: Aveeno Positively Agless Daily Moisturizer SPF 30

After trying this moisturizer for over half a year - finally finished the bottle! - I felt it was necessary to do a good, detailed review. Just letting you know that it had a very fair trial run, as do all my product reviews. ;)

A few things to note beforehand: I am young, yes, so I do not really have wrinkles yet; just a few fine lines from the dry desert climate. My skin type is normal/combo, with a little occasional oiliness in my T-zone. I am also fair-skinned, so I'm always looking for great sun protection, which is one reason I chose this product.

With that out of the way, here's my full run-down of Aveeno's Positively Ageless Moisturizer with SPF 30.

Description: "A nourishing anti-aging lotion that works in harmony with your skin to help accelerate skin's natural renewal process. It is clinically shown to replenish surface cells faster so your skin looks and feels younger. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, dermatologist tested. You will see: visibly reduced lines and wrinkles; increased firmness; fresher, younger, more vibrant skin; softer, smoother skin. Used daily, this advanced sun protection helps prevent future sun damage such as fine lines, wrinkles and even age spots. And because it's from AVEENO, it's gentle enough for even sensitive skin."

Price: $18.99/2.5 oz.

Results: First, though the price is a little steep for a drugstore moisturizer, you get a lot of product. (I did mention I used this almost daily for over six months, right? ;) Much more than many other brands, which only offer an ounce or ounce and a half of product for even more ridiculous prices. It comes in a pump-top tube, which is both a blessing and a curse - dispensing is easy and mess-free, but the tube seems impossible to open, meaning you can't get any product out that may be stuck at the bottom. Luckily, when I held my empty bottle up to the light, it looked like I had used nearly every drop. Finally, an effective pump dispenser! :)

The moisturizer is thick and creamy, but absorbs into skin well, especially after a good cleansing and exfoliation or a warm shower - this is when I most recommend applying. If you use too much, it could feel more like it's sitting on your skin, and there is potential for a slightly oily residue left behind. This is also why I cannot recommend this product for very oily skin; it is not an oil-free product.

The smell isn't bad, but took a little getting used to. After using, skin feels soft and smooth, and very well-hydrated. Wait about five minutes before starting your make-up to let the moisturizer set in. Again, just be sure not to use too much, unless you have very dry skin that needs extra attention. Once it's had some time to sink in, my make-up seemed to go on fine, if not smoother than usual.

As for anti-aging effects? I can't say I saw any huge improvements in my skin where my fine lines were concerned, except for a possible smoothing effect. Because it is such a thick and hydrating moisturizer, though, it may have prevented any new lines from sneaking their way in during the months I used it, and the excellent UVA/UVB protection certainly helped my skin as well. I could also feel a difference in softness and texture when I skipped a day or more. According to some, the moisturizer works better when paired with the serum included in this line, but I didn't purchase both.

To summarize, this is an excellent moisturizer with great daily sun protection - but I would not say it is an amazing anti-aging product, as most aren't. The soy extracts and AHA ingredients are undoubtedly good for your skin, and with time, can help improve its condition. The SPF and natural ingredients will help keep your face soft, smooth, and hydrated, as well as prevent future sun damage.

If you're looking for dramatic change, feel free to try it out, but don't expect visible results for at least four weeks - and consider trying the serum with it or instead, which is supposedly more effective against aging. Overall, a very nice moisturizer; I only wish they could make an oil-free version for days when my T-zone is acting up.

Now, to decide what moisturizer to buy next...

What's your favorite moisturizer? :)

Tip of the Day #5: Quick Guide to Reward Programs

It seems that nearly every place you buy beauty products nowadays has its own reward program - and they probably do. How can you keep all the cards, points, and discounts straight? Here's a little guide outlining the customer reward programs of a few of the places you may shop at often if you're on a budget.

CVS/pharmacy - CVS ExtraCare

The ExtraCare program system is great for those who love shopping at CVS, and works on rewards called "Extra Bucks." You'll receive 2% back with every in-store and online purchase, along with additional Bucks on certain advertised items weekly. You'll also save more money with your membership card on weekly ad items. Membership is free and you can sign up online.

Every three months, your Extra Bucks will print on your store receipt to use on your next purchase - but you can check and print them at any time online. If you use CVS as your pharmacy, you'll also get an Extra Buck for every two prescriptions purchased. Being a loyal shopper REALLY pays off here!

Sally Beauty Supply - Sally Beauty Club

This membership requires a payment of $5.00 per year. Intended for non-professional customers, members receive a discounted price on every non-sale item purchase in the store. Once a member, you'll also be able to sign up for a special newsletter containing info on extra savings, samples, and product news. It's a shame you have to pay, but the price is relatively low, at least. :) If you're a frequent shopper, it will definitely pay for itself in no time.

Sephora - Beauty Insider

I'm guessing the only way you haven't heard about this program is if you have never stepped foot in a Sephora store! The sales associates really love to advertise it. :)

Sephora's free Beauty Insider program rewards one point for every dollar spent in-store or online for purchases. When a member reaches 100 points, the member can choose from a selection of deluxe beauty product samples. (From my own experience, the selection is limited, but changes every few months. The samples are also quite nice in size and quality, and often come from high-end brands.)

In addition, if you place an order online within 14 days of your birthday, you'll receive a free gift! You can also obtain it without a purchase by visiting a store and presenting your Beauty Insider card. Just make they know it's your birthday!

ULTA - The Club at ULTA

The free reward program at ULTA is based on your spending during four different earning periods throughout the year, while using your ULTA card for purchases. You can earn "reward certificates" depending on your level of spending, which can be redeemed for free products or salon services. The levels increase by $50 increments and are as follows:

  • Level 1: Spend $50 per earning period
  • Level 2: Spend $100 per earning period
  • Level 3: Spend $150 per earning period
  • Level 4: Spend $200 per earning period
  • Level 5: Spend $250 per earning period
  • Level 6: Spend $300 per earning period
And, of course, members can enjoy special offers and coupons all year. Refunds and returns are deducted from your account, and certificates do have expiration dates - so use it or lose it! :)

Walgreens

Walgreens has a rewards program, I believe, but it is brand-new at the moment. I'll update with information when I learn more about it.

As far as I know, Rite-Aid and Longs Drugs do not currently have their own reward programs. If they do, please let me know! I'm sure you're already aware that we don't really have those stores around here. ;)
